Urban Gardens

Created by

Create an urban garden to grow fresh vegetables for our hungry families.

Why we want to create this project

(1) We are all hungry. Usually we eat just one meal a day, just white rice (rice with nothing in it, or sometimes a few peas). Some days we are not able to eat at all. Our children are malnourished.
(2) Even if we are able to grow just a few fresh vegetables it will help a lot. Also, if we grow extra we can sell some and get an income for other necessities. And we will learn to grow food and to help others living nearby learn to do the same.
(3) We all live in the same neighborhood, Cite Fequier, in Cite Soleil. This is a terribly poor area, with no schools, markets or anything at all except for the houses we have put together on dirt with pieces of sheet metal. Some of us met in People in Need, and others are our friends. Some of us are adults and some are children. There are four mothers and three children. All the children are at least ten years old. They understand their responsibilities and we think this will be an exciting learning experience for them. We all want to work together and help each other build the garden and grow food.

How will we create it?

(1) We will all work together equally to create and maintain the urban garden. Some of us are from the countryside and already know a lot about farming. But we need training on how to grow on such a small plot of land in the city, including the kinds of fertilizers and what kinds of plants grow well together. People in Need has agreed to provide the training for that. They are going to loan us tools to use at no cost. They also helped us figure out how much this will cost, including a fence to protect the garden, seeds, and fertilzer.
(2) The urban garden will be grown on the vacant land not far from our houses. We received permission to use this from Joel, who is the President of Action Chretienne, a school which is in the nearby neighborhood.
(3) The Coordinator of this project is [Ermozane Toussaint]. She was most excited about creating this project, and she helped convince our group to undertake this.

How will it work?

(1) The vegetables grown will be used by all who work in the garden, shared according to the amount of work each does. If there are extras, we may be able to sell some nearby. And we hope to be able to give some extra vegetables for free to people who need it and have no money - especially old people or disabled people.
(2) There is a lot of work to do to take care of a garden, including planning, preparing the land, planting, weeding, fertilizing, and more. This must be done everyday. Each person will tend the garden one day a week for two hours. At some time, like for preparing the land, we will all work together.
(3) All the members of our group will help whenever necessary. The Coordinator (Ermozante) will be responsible for making sure that we all know what our tasks are and that everyone does what they agree to do. Also, she will be responsible for regular updates of the project on the website, including messages, photos and maybe even a video.

The vegetable is an edible part of a plant. This could be the root of the plant, the stalk of the plant or the leaves of the plant. Vegetables harvested from flowers, such as pumpkins, cucumbers or tomatoes, are not by definition vegetables. True vegetables include carrots, water egg plant, water cress,, lettuce, and spinach. However, many fruits are considered vegetables because of their taste. Many vegetable seeds are actually fruit seeds.

Myriam:
Food,
Some people definite good as a necessity, spend a day without eating anything won’t be good for your body and your health also.
Other people feed themselves because they just like to eat, and other people eat, especially when they are facing a hard period, after a broken relationship, having lost their job, a parent. Some people eat a lot, other not, different country different culture, different kind of food. Eating it’s not only an action of eating; you should know it’s a social action, sensual, emotive and vital also.

Food Direct action : Urban gardens

Grow vegetables.
Required: land, seeds, water, tools, fence.

This could be a large space, used by several families. Or it could be a mini urban garden, located next to individual houses. On an even smaller scale we can help create nutritional gardens, growing herbs and other very simple and nutritious plants.
