Cite Soleil
Intro
Cite Soleil is a notoriously poor slum in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Through our active collaboration with Action Cite Soleil, we are able to work in this area, a place where most large aid organizations have little influence, most because of security concerns. Marcel Jean is our Community Coordinator and also a member of the Board of Action Cite Soleil. Background
According to the International Red Cross (2007) in an article entitledEducation in Cite Soleil
The majority of children can not attend schoolDespite having a large number of children who have had the chance to go to school, but the majority can not go due to lack of economic and those who are lucky enough to go to school some time they move to school without a meal , where they are spending 5 hours at school without anything to eat and they get back home like that. a few of their relative can afford to provide them about 5, 7, 10 gourdes to buy things in the playground.
Children in Nun- school and Christians school their education is different from those who are in other schools.
Secutity and safety
Cite Soleil is the one of the biggest shanty-towns in Haiti. It is an area with a bad reputation for violence. There are not enough policemen for a population of about 483, 000 people. There are only 70 policemen for 3 police stations, but one of them is not even open yet. Because of the constant danger to personal safety, there is little social stability in Cite Soleil.Water
Access to water in Cite Soleil is poor. The water is unpurified and dangerous. This problem is one of the major causes of Haiti's high mortality rate.People in Need Partnership has built a water purification system, but it is not yet functional because water is currently not being delivered to the area.
Health
Due to the poverty in which they are immersed they suffer from all kinds of needs and diseases. 90% of people there are drinking unsafe water because they don't have a way to buy a big gallon of drinkable water for 30 gourdes (75 cents US). Unpurified water used to come to Cite Soleil about five times a week. Now it comes just once a week, and they have to fight to buy a bucket of water for 2 gourdes.Culture
