friday night
What an Amazingly long day at the UN compound!!! We have spent the last two solid days there, going from one module to the next, asking hundreds of people questions. Sitting in on shelter meetings with IOM, CCCM, and logistics. We get shoved this way, directed that way, ushered this way, and end up where we began 24 hours prior....HOWEVER, at the end of the day, we were successful!!! By enlisting the help of people we met yesterday, and being persistant with a stamina that just wont quit-we were able to submit our request for shelter Assistance. We applied for 35 tents, 45 tarps and 35 hygiene units. We then refocused our energy on getting some food assistance, as it would free up some of our funds to help these displaced people on a more long-term plan. We figured, we were there, it wouldn't hurt to ask! So, we smiled, and politely stated our case....The heavens parted, and this man physically walked me to a department and handed me over to another man. Who then printed out the form, filled it out with me and physically walked us to another department. He stayed with us and spoke to a frenchman, who signed off on it, and told us to return monday with a medium-sized truck and they would have 188 boxes of food for me!!! I wanted to dance and cry. With this food we can feed our partners and the entire tent city for 2 more weeks!!! The tents we won't find out about for 5-7 more days....so think good thoughts!! The past two days have been hot, frustrating, overwhelming and draining. I found out that it is so hot here, that at the end of a day of walking for hours, that my nail polish actually melted through my socks, so they were stuck to my feet....isn't that a lovely thought. Heather and I are checking into a hotel in Petionville tomorrow, as we have not showered since sunday. Is that too much information? Haahaa....bye for now!!
